Mid week update..

I have been having such a nice vacation. Every morning I'm out in the gardens..then making soap..then crocheting. What a life, if only it was like this every week. Maybe some day. Good music makes it all the better too.

Here is a small teaser of my daily life as of late.

Nothing is better than the morning sun in the gardens..

Purple balloon flowers.

SOAP!!

I have seven flavors made so far (2 are still in the molds until tomorrow morning)

Lemon Poppy seed, Lavender, Lemongrass & Pink Grapefruit w/ Calendula flowers, Creamsicle, and French Green Clay.

They are coming together..today I made Bentonite and Australian Blue Wash Clay. Can't wait to see how those turn out. I promise a post with all the details and everything very very soon. I never like to show things before they are perfect!

Then I've decided to also offer some handmade, crocheted washcloth / scrubbies to the new shop too. Here is a sneak peak..

Ok, I'm off to crochet for a while. I hope everyone is having a nice week. I'm not trying to rub it in, but my week has been so relaxing and definitely what I needed after so much stress at my job...

Market Madness

The market was wonderful this past weekend. The loot: carrots, hamburger patties, pork chops, zucchini, corn on the cob, cucumbers, eggplant, cherries, nectarines, yellow watermelon, eggs, semolina bread and cinnamon raisin bread. (also if you notice a Polly nose is in the shot)

The cucumbers are actually for some soap I'm making up this week and the zucchini, that's for some delicious bread I think I will make today.

Saturday was my sister's big blow out BBQ. I didn't know over 3/4 of the people there. So my brother, myself and the mister decided to go on an adventure in their woods (they have over 150 acres). I thought it would be a nice little hike in the woods and that it would be cooler in there (it was over 100 and HUMID) So off we went..

We stopped and hung out with the alpacas and goats for a few minutes (I think she has four or five of each). They also have a donkey! The mister took a picture but he must not have loaded it to instagram. So after making fun of the donkey's poofy butt for a few minutes we began our adventure.

We found one of their many trails and began walking..walking straight UP. I figured that it couldn't just keep climbing up and so steep but kept going. We found lots of blackberries along the way and we joked that if we got lost we'd have food to keep us alive until the rescuers came looking. As we kept going..up and up which seemed like an eternity..I started to feel super lightheaded and thought I was going to pass out! I guess my morning eliptical trainer workouts are not getting me in as good of shape as I thought! haha But hey, it was also 100+ degrees! That's my defense and I'm sticking to it!

Mister snapped this picture on the last decent (which totally does not look bad here - but really, I'm not making it up, it was steep!). That's me in the background flipping him off and that's my uber tall and skinny brother, Brent wearing flip flops on the adventure.

It was gorgeous up there, despite the prickers giving me lacerations around my ankles and the insanely steep climbs. When we came out everyone commented on how red my face was - for a good hour.."Are you okay, you're face is so red?!" UGH! I hate the fact my face gets so red all the time. The mister jokes and tells people it's because I'm an alcoholic, the bastard. I wish I had 150 acres of woods to explore every day. As much as it sucked and I don't want to do that walk again when it's 100 degrees out, I'd love to be able to walk that every day. You'd be in awesome shape in no time! I was told they have two waterfalls. So I will have to go explore and find those soon as well.

Monday marked my first day of vacation. I woke up and started my day by diving right into my front garden project. I should have taken a "before" picture. It was SO overgrown and crazy with weeds it was insane. The weather was perfect and no humidity so I stayed out there a little longer than I had planned, working away pulling weeds. This morning as I type this it's only 60 out, I'm in pure heaven! I'm going to have a slice of our homemade cinnamon toast and get back out there to work before the sun is in full force. Then back inside to make my next two batches of soap..then crocheting in the backyard. Ahhhh, vacation. Yes, I am probably one of the only weirdos that gets up at 6:30 every day on her vacation and has projects and works the entire time. I promise to take pictures of progress today and will post them later in the week (both garden and soaps)

Last night was another one of those perfect nights..we ordered pizza and ate outside next to a fire talking and listening to Mumford and Sons...I wish every night could be a night like that..hopefully tonight will be another one.

Buy Handmade vol 16

This week behind this scenes is in New York City

Name: Karen Lila Yost
Age: 37
Occupation: Jeweler
Etsy Shop : AnomalyJewelry ( www.etsy.com/shop/AnomalyJewelry )

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a jeweler, mother, wife, painter, and crafter. I used to do more but once I had a kid, lots of my hobbies had to end. Kids are harder work than your Mom told you they were. And, they are worth it.

How did you come up with your business name, is there any special meaning behind it?

My business name was the result of brainstorming with my best friend. In the middle of trying to come up with a fitting name for my jewelry line, our conversation digressed to another topic. While I forget the exact sentence I spoke, I said something containing the word "anomaly." My friend and I both said at the same time, "THAT'S IT!"

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from just living life, and it's not really a process so much as what I am left with in my head after living in this insane world. I often have more ideas in my head than I am physically able to create. Sometimes I think of ideas while going to sleep and sometimes while on the subway. Often I am inspired by things I see on the internet or on the streets of NYC where I live.

Do you also sell your work at craft shows?

I do not sell my jewelry at craft shows only through Etsy and, wholesale, to stores all over the U.S.

What is your most cherished handmade item?

My most cherished handmade items are:

the wedding rings I made for my husband and myself. His is a series of my actual baby teeth cast into a silver band. One of the teeth is 24K gold. Mine is a snake accented with black and clear diamonds. One of the diamonds is from my grandmother's ring.

Other favorites are the two paintings my father did of my daughter Lulu when she was a baby. Now I am starting to think of all the miniatures my mother hand sculpted for my dollhouse when I was a girl. I come from a long line of makers. I cherish everything ever hand made for me. My husband made me a long list of hand made gifts I deeply love. One is a short graphic novel illustrating how we met one another. The list really goes on and on. Basically, anything hand made trumps something bought. Always.

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do?

Apart from making things one of my main loves is going to flea markets. I get a rush driving up to each and every one. I also love to travel all over the world. I also really like going to the movies. Sometimes, when I have just had it a movie is the only thing that can get me out of my funk. I love spending time with friends and hanging out with my family.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be and why?

I would like to do something involving professional scuba diving. My experiences sea diving have been some of the most amazing in my life. It's weird thinking about doing anything that is not art related since it has never seriously occurred to me to do anything else. The hard part for me has been deciding which artistic passion to follow.

Five years from now you will be…

Five years from now is hard to imagine. I really don't project into the future much anymore. I guess the only thing I know for sure is that my husband and I are going to try to add another kid to the family. So I guess there will be 4 of us making things, laughing, fighting, loving. I hope 5 years from now is very similar to now, and it probably will be.

Describe yourself in five words:

I am weird, small, fiery, wise, and artistic

Carrying on with the five theme, if I were to turn on your <insert whatever type of music player you use here>, what five artists/songs would I see on your recently played list?

Tom Waits, The Breeders, Pulp, The Magnetic Fields, The Soundtrack from Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Lastly, do you have any advice for anyone thinking about opening their own shop or participating in craft shows?

You will work harder and longer hours for your own business than at any job you have ever worked and it will be worth it.

fff vol 26

Favorite finds from the last week:

1. Etsy find of the week: Becton Dickinson Vintage Industrial Syringe Cabinet

So creepy but cool at the same time. I'm sure I could find many other uses, you know other than for my syringe stash I have randomly laying around.

2. Blog of the week: DIY SHOWOFF

I just have to say another thank you to DIY Showoff for featuring my cabinet makeover. Her site is chalk full of awesome DIY inspiration. Get on over there and start a project now!

3. Please can I move in?

I definitely would not say no to this house and these amazing views! I think I need to move out west...

4. Get in my belly... Blueberry Lemon Doughnuts

Oh My Goodness! These look sooooooo amazing. Has anyone ever made homemade doughnuts before? I may just have to try this out because holy man they look so good. My only worry is that they will be so awesome I will eat all of them in one sitting!

5. Tee shirt of the week from Patagonia

The mister has this shirt (obviously in men's and not in seafoam green) and I loved it so much I ordered one for myself. I got it in black. Five dollars of the sale of the shirt goes to the Save the Waves Organization The protect the beaches from getting bought up and over developed from retarded developers who want to do things like put up condos and McMansions. It's a great organization. Go check them out.

So this weekend marks the start of my vacation. I'm not going anywhere but have lots of projects I need to get completed. One being SOAP. I promise to post and let you all in on the business - the name..the logo..the product..We also have a mega BBQ to attend on Saturday. The mister and I are both not big on huge gatherings. We both have anxieties and, well, I don't do well with masses of screaming children. So hopefully that won't be going on or I will be looking for an escape route rather quickly. But it's at my sister's place - so you know - there will bouncing on the jumpy pillow, playing with sling shots and pedal carts. And of course playing with puppies as they just got THREE!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

DIY Show Off

The yummiest, tastiest lemonade you will ever squeeze

The best lemonade I think I ever had drank was at our antique show we go to each year. It was fresh squeezed and had a little bit of pulp in it - was pretty sugary and tart. Just perfect. But expensive. Holy man was it expensive. Like, $8 for a glass! I know that my eyes popped out of my head a little when they told me the price but I love lemonade and I never really get anything for myself - so why not. I bought it. And boy, it was sooooo delicious. Those same people are actually at the farmer's market I go to each week. But I'm so cheap I never buy one.

Enter, the lemonade pitcher. I knew I needed the perfect lemonade recipe to put in it..

Yummiest lemonade in the world:

You'll need:
Lemons - (7-10) however many you can use that will yield you one cup of juice
Water
Simple Syrup (sugar & water)

What you need to do:
Okay, pour one cup of sugar and one cup water into a pan and heat until the sugar dissolves.  While that is dissolving, squeeze your lemons. If you are a real woman you do it by hand (just kidding - it sucks doing it by hand and I need to find a little thing-a-ma-bob (technical term) that will help me with this action. The first time I made it I used 7 lemons, this last one took 10- go figure. You are supposed to "roll" the lemons and in theory it helps loosen them to make it easier to squeeze. Who knows if this is true or not. But yeah, I "rolled" my lemons first, cut in half and squeezed and squeezed until my fingers were purple. Do this over and over again, until you have a cup. Then I took a small strainer, put it over the top of my pitcher and poured in the juice. Pour in the simple syrup. Then add 3 cups of water. I also took one more lemon and cut slices and added them to the pitcher. Stir. Chill.

It's such a simple recipe, but oh soooo good. Well that is, if you like lemonade (who doesn't like lemonade?!)

Serve with some ice and go kick you feet up and drink the best darn lemonade you'll ever drink. If you have a recipe that outdoes this one. Please let me know, because I think this one is a winner!

Garden Madness - Open Farm Day cont.

The gardens that I saw this past weekend were simply gorgeous. They gave me a lot of inspiration for the layout of our yard and some different flowers that I really wasn't planning on mixing in.

I love how veggie gardens mixed with flowers look and can not wait until this fall when I get everything laid out for next spring.

Until that time I will just gawk and admire what others have already accomplished...

Does anyone else have a garden or garden tips/plans? We are doing the front and back yards so I'm always up for inspiration.

Happy Mid Week and first of August everyone! Make sure to stop by tomorrow for the BEST homemade lemonade ever!
