fff vol 52

Favorite finds from the last week:

Etsy find of the week:

I am in so much love with these little coin purses from Octopurse. Plus Daphne is such a sweetheart. She will actually be gracing us with a behind the scenes interview the end of March. So be on the look out for that. Please go check out her purses. Believe me I could have posted bunches and bunches that I am currently drooling over..but who doesn't love an adorable hedgehog!?

Please can I move in?

I LOVE this bedroom! Look at those teeny beds! I told the mister we would each have our own bed - the 3 girls and then one for me and one for him. hahah I am just so smitten. I just keep staring at it and looking at all the little areas.

Get in my belly...

The first time I ever made a bunt cake was last year, this recipe. I was super bummed when my insides didn't look like this and it stuck to the pan and didn't turn out. I had made it to take with us to Easter dinner. Never make a recipe you've never made before when you are baking for lots of people (and baking it THAT day)! I quickly made (I believe) whoopie pies as my safety backup. Man was I bummed. I have since made a couple other bunt cakes and love them. I've been craving cake..so maybe this weekend I'll search out a bunt cake recipe.

Tee shirt of the week from:

This shirt has been around for a while on Threadless but it's just so cute. Plus we are supposed to be getting slammed with lots of snow over the next few days here in NY. So I thought it was fitting.

Finally...the Farmers Market is back in swing this weekend. Holy mother has it felt like forever! I can not wait to go and see everyone and get FOOD!!! This snow storm better not keep us from going - I will put a plow on the front of the toaster (thats what i call my scion xb) or chain up a sled and let the girls drag us on out!

Other than the market. Not much else is going on this weekend. I have some shop changes and lots of thinking. I'll put this out there and hopefully get some responses to this: If you have your own business, do you do wholesale? and IF you do wholesale - what do you charge? Do you do the stereotypical 50% off (which i think is INSANE) do you vary the price drop based on how much they want to order? what are your thoughts?

I've been having quite a few inquires lately. So it's really time I come up with an answer and really be firm on my thoughts. I need help guys!! Give me advice.

Have a great weekend!

The Hive

Today I wanted to share another new soap I have recently added to my shop. It was inspired by this lady who once told me her love of everything cinnamon. I actually hate the smell of cinnamon. She was in shock (as most of you may be as well) I believe she said something to the effect; How the hell can you not like cinnamon?! I may be exaggerating and these may not be her exact words - no quotes were used. But if these were not the exact words - that is what was implied! (hahah -It's okay I still love ya Nicole!) Basically, it gives me a headache if I smell it too long. I'm a wuss. Yes I know this. But here is the extremely bizarre thing...

I love/hate the smell of this soap! I can't stop smelling it. It basically smells like a red hot. When it was curing (it's fully cured and ready for buying now) I would walk by my soap racks and just picked it up and inhale it in! Every time I would die laughing and say "Why do I love this soap so much!? I hate cinnamon!!" My mister thought I was insane (who am I kidding he always thinks that)

So this is for you Nicole, "Citrus N' Spice" aka - "Nicole's how the hell do you not like cinnamon soap"

wiw v. 7

The Chaser
2008 - R - 125 minutes

Storyline

Joong-ho is a dirty detective turned pimp in financial trouble as several of his girls have recently disappeared without clearing their debts. While trying to track them down, he finds a clue that the vanished girls were all called up by a same client whom one of his girls is meeting with right now.

We love foreign movies..and a foreign serial killer movie?! Even better! This movie was made outside of Seoul, Korean and was inspired by Korean serial killer, Yoo Young-chul. We really liked it, full of suspense and kept you on the edge of your seat, sometimes wanting to yell at the screen. Very gruesome. So if blood and gore is not your thing..then this movie won't be either!

tasty tuesday vol 5 citrus cookies

There are some days you have failures in the kitchen. Then there are some days you have EPIC failures. This recipe for me, was an EPIC failure.

It started off beautiful. The smells and the mixing of the sugar with the orange zest.. I was pretty excited. But my excitement didn't last long.

The recipe advised to rolls into small balls, instead I used my small scooper. I had tasted the dough at this point and to be honest wasn't thrilled. It was extremely bland. I assumed once they were baked they would come together. Especially with the glaze..glaze always makes everything better.

So they baked. She advised in her recipe to make sure they don't over-cook. But I couldn't even get them to fully bake! The first batch was in the oven 15 minutes and was still not right. The bottoms were lightly brown but they never expanded and flattened. They were still completely raw in the center.

So the second tray I took my fingers and flattened down each cookie. Hoping by doing this they would bake completely through. It actually made them worse! They didn't bake at all!! After 15 minutes it was still totally and completely raw dough on the tray!!

(this is AFTER they baked for 15 minutes!!)

While the cookies were baking (or so I thought) I made the glaze. And even that was a failure. It didn't set and nothing I was doing could get it to be the correct consistency to set up right. Everything went into the trash.

A wasted afternoon with nothing to show for it except dirty dishes and a garbage bag full of half baked, gross cookies. What a waste.

If you want to give the cookies a try I posted the original link here. Maybe you will have better luck. If you do please let me know!

Currently.

Thinking about: How my Monday is going to go. I have many new changes happening at work this coming week, including a transfer of teams and a new boss. I'm a little bit nervous, a little stressed but mostly anticipating change and going into all this with an open mind.

Watching: Guilty pleasure - Grey's Anatomy season 8 on Netflix. I remember years ago, a woman I worked with raved on and on about this show. McDreamy and Mcthis and Mcthat, she would gush on and on about the show. But I never watched it. Quite a few months ago I started watching it and it became my guilty pleasure to watch while I crochet all my blankets. I've now made it to season 8. Which means I only have about 20 more episodes..then will have to find a new guilty pleasure.

Reading: The Contortionist's Handbook by Craig Clevenger. I picked this up the other day at the library, I'm only a few chapters in but I'm really liking it.

Listening: Ella chewing on a bone almost the same size as her while listening for the beep on my toaster oven to let me know my giant cookie is hopefully cooking. The element in my oven died as I was pre-heating it to bake a skillet cookie. I have to wait until our local repair shop opens in the morning in hopes they have one in stock. If not I'll have to place an order for one and be without an oven until one comes in. Thank goodness (and hopefully) this is all that is wrong with it.

Making: A skillet cookie in a toaster oven! Oi! Hopefully it comes out okay seeing that I already had one major baking failure this weekend.

Anticipating: Change, good or bad. Change is inevitable. It's how we handle that change that defines us.

Planning: A possible blog rehaul and face lift. While I love the current look part of me is craving change. A more minimalism, fresh, streamlined look. We'll see. I'm just thinking and planning in my head. I have a gazillion other more important things going on at the moment.. but it's something that may happen..or may not.

Loving: The thought of spring. I know it's still a few months away. But I can't stop thinking about getting our gardens ready..being able to go into my front yard to pick veggies and eat them that night for dinner. Having our outdoor farmers market open again, and this time being a vendor!! I'm excited and can't wait.

Making me happy: My three girls keeping me company this past weekend while the mister went off to Boston. (and stayed an extra day) We had a relaxing, quiet weekend and even a popcorn movie night. Their favorite (and mine)

I also can now finally share with you the blankets I made for Christmas presents. The blue one was for Kevin's parents and the grey one was for his brother and his brother's wife. I didn't really get good pictures because I had forgotten to take any and then the mister was getting ready to leave on friday to go and I grabbed them and took some quick shots.

His parent's blanket was enormous. It turned out being larger than a King sized blanket! It was so huge, but so amazing. I loved how it turned out.

Jason and Jenn's blanket, I wised up and scaled it down a bit. While it was still large (probably Queen sized) it is definitely more manageable! I wrote out the same basic pattern and color rotation of each and am actually in the process of making a blanket for my mom which will be the size of the smaller one. So crazy how different they can look based on the colors used.

Happy Monday all.

Buy Handmade vol 45

We head down South this week to Louisiana.

Name: Nichol Brinkman
Age: 32
Occupation:  Fiber Artist/  Mom

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Nichol Brinkman.  I design and construct a line of soft toys, pillows, and baby mobiles featuring ninjas, sumo wrestlers, angel pigs, and roller-skating mod girls. I also make digital prints of fabric collages.  I like to make characters that feel like they come from a very specific place, and reflect how I think childhood should be:  full of wonder, joy and delight.
When did you start creating and how long have you been on Etsy?
I always have created, but I began sewing in 2007.  I took one fibers class in college (I was a painting major), and I loved it so much.  2007 is when I bought my first sewing machine and just clumsily taught myself how to make weird pillow monsters with it.
How did you come up with your business name, is there any special meaning behind it?
At first my business name was Pillow Monsters, but that was before I was really business-y, and I later discovered the name was trademarked by a different company (which never took off, I don’t think).  I changed it to Pink Cheeks Studios after my son Walter’s bright pink cheeks.  I want my shop to exude joy and Walter is the essence of joy.

Has your Etsy shop become your full time job?
It has.  I originally wanted to be able to supplement my family’s income enough so that I could be a stay at home mom, but now I need to send Walter to daycare part-time just to keep up.  It is the best for both of us though.  I feel more fulfilled when I have the time to work creatively, which helps me to feel more joyful and in turn a better mom.  And, Walter gets to run around and act like a monkey with a bunch of other kids a few days a week.
How would you describe your creative process?
I draw a lot.  I draw with tiny, fine point micron pens in my moleskine sketchbooks.  I play around with different shapes and I draw different faces in the shapes.   Drawing, for me, is the most important step in my creative process and when I feel the most potential.  I make my patterns on cardstock and then I spend a lot of time choosing fabrics for each piece.  I pick fabrics based on pattern, but also on texture.  I love a wide variety of textures in each piece.  Then I sew away!  I always stuff firmly so that my little people/monsters/animals feel sturdy and important.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get inspiration from a lot of other artists.  My favorites lately are:
Alexander Girard (particularly his wooden dolls:)
Chicago Imagist, Karl Wirsum's sculptures:
And, everything Elsa Mora does (she also has a lovely blog):
I also am really drawn to the images in the French magazine MILK, which I have an online subscription to, but you can also peruse the printed magazine at Barnes and Noble

Do you also sell your work at craft shows? (If so- answer the following questions)
Lately, I have been just fulfilling orders for my online shop, but I have done artist markets in the past and I love them very much.
• What shows have you taken part of, and do you have a favorite?

My favorite show has been the Bloomington Handmade Market in Bloomington IN.  The creators of the event are artists themselves and they select great artists and have a DJ and a coffee bar.
• How long does it take you to prepare for a show? Do you have any special methods of getting ready?
I get ready for the show by making lists of what to create and spending a couple months trying to reach that goal.  I also spend a bit of time figuring out my booth display which is one of my favorite part about participating in these events.  I am always so envious of brick and mortar shop owners who get to make elaborate window displays, and I like to treat my booth space like that.
• Describe an experience from a show (good or bad) and why that pushes you to continue with your work
I vividly remember a group of three young girls who ran over to my booth.  Each picked up one of my dolls and had an impromptu dance party.  There were lots of giggles involved.  It was the perfect reaction to my work.  That joyful moment made me so proud and excited, and gave me a lot of energy to keep creating.

What is your most cherished handmade item?
I made a wooden marionette of a three-headed-business-man-monster at a marionette workshop in Prague.  It was an amazing experience.  The workshop consisted of about 15 other participants, all from different countries, and we were all learning this new craft from a gentle wood-carving puppet master.  Plus, we were in Prague which is the most beautiful city in the world.  Here is a link to the workshop, for any readers of your that are interested.  It is definitely one of my most treasured experiences:  http://puppetsinprague.eu/up_coming_workshops.html

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do?
I like playing imagination games with my son (currently it involves a lot of extinguishing fires), watching movies and shows with my husband and exploring New Orleans (it is an hour away from our new home).
If you weren’t an artist, what would you be and why?
Everything I can think of is still sort of arty like film director or musician.  Maybe I would love to run my own summer camp?
Five years from now you will be…
Doing similar things but better in hopefully a room all of my own instead of a corner of our living room.
Describe yourself in five words:
Compassionate, creative, friendly, warm, quiet
Carrying on with the five theme, if I were to turn on your <insert whatever type of music player you use here>, what five artists/songs would I see on your recently played list?
Fun.
Andrew Bird
Talking Heads
James Brown
Edith Piaf
Lastly, do you have any advice for anyone thinking about opening their own shop or participating in craft shows?
Always try to be distinctive and push your boundaries, but most importantly put love into what you do.

fff vol 51

Favorite finds from the last week:

Etsy find of the week:

While I'm not a fan of coffee.. (actually I've never drank it but I know I would never be a coffee drinker. Especially seeing that I don't drink anything with caffeine. thats all beside the point) I came across this on Etsy and thought it looked awesome. My mister LOVES coffee. I think it flows in his veins. I may have to get him a package and see how he likes it. The packaging itself sells it! They have four different flavors. If you are a coffee drinker, check them out. Some of their profits also go to sponsor a local soup kitchen. Just good stuff.

Please can I move in?

Can you imagine this view? And if you say yes and that you wake up to that daily you best be sending me a one way plane ticket to your house. I swear I don't take up much room, and don't eat very much. I also am a great baker - I'll keep you plump on treats for payment.

Get in my belly...

I always gravitate toward the homemade style cookies. Never anything with the frills and fanciness. I love more rustic and gramma-type desserts. So, these are definitely right for me. They look like they would be so amazing and citrus-y. A friend of mine from work gave me a ricotta cookie recipe that is very similar to this with orange zest and those cookies were amazing. So I can almost taste what these would be like. I may need to make these this weekend.

Tee shirt Dress of the week from Modcloth:

I'm starting a very cute dress collection for when the Farmer's Market starts up in the spring. This one would be so cute to add to that collection. 100% cotton, how I love cotton dresses!

So happy February everyone. How it is already February is insanely crazy to me. One month is already gone of 2013. Time just is flying by.

This weekend the mister is headed out to see his family in Boston and I'll be home left to my own devices for three days. Just me and the girls. I'll be fine. While it will be quiet, I have lots of activities planned. Soap making, ordering more soap supplies and more organizing, working on my mother's blanket, possibly working 5 hours (hasn't been approved yet), baking some cookies!, reading (I went to the library the other day and picked up a few exciting books), watching random shows on Netflix that are too girly or things the mister would never want to watch and/or make fun of me for watching. Popcorn party with the girls (they love popcorn/movie nights)I'm sure it will fly by and I won't even get to half of the things I want to. But thats the fun of a weekend when you are totally on your own. I can eat popcorn and candy for dinner and not worry about it.

Have a great weekend all. Anyone have exciting plans? What do you tend to do when you are home alone?
